Research Area Battery Technology
The transition towards a climate- neutral Europe requires fundamental changes in the way we generate and use energy. Long-term, coordinated research, as well as education of students and professionals, are needed to build up knowledge and competences for a growing battery value chain in Sweden.

Energy Area of Advance
Gathers industry, authorities, and academia to create consensus on long-term challenges and to jointly find solutions for the future.

Health Engineering Area of Advance
Addresses major health-related societal challenges by developing new technologies and innovative solutions in close collaboration with healthcare and industry.

Information and Communication Technology Area of Advance
Contributes to a smarter and safer society. Chalmers conducts research in AI, communication technology, complex systems, and computer science, in close collaboration with industry and society.

Materials Science Area of Advance
Develops new materials for tomorrow's sustainable technologies, materials that can be part of solutions to global challenges in energy, health, construction, and transport.

Nano Area of Advance
Coordinates research on the unique chemical and physical phenomena that occur at very small dimensions and promotes the development of technologies that utilise these phenomena, for example in electronics, biotechnology, and energy technology.

Production Area of Advance
The Production Area of Advance is Chalmers’ university-wide strategic platform for research and collaboration in sustainable production. We bring together expertise from multiple departments and disciplines to drive the transition enabled by electrification, digitalisation and circularity.

Transport Area of Advance
Develops new knowledge to meet transport-related challenges in accordance with the UN's global goals for sustainable development.

Thematic area Ocean
Our strong maritime heritage goes back to the establishment of the university. Today, most departments have research, education, and or utilisation related to the marine and maritime domain, contributing to the grand challenges associated with human utilisation of the oceans and marine resources. All in line with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Thematic area Space
A sustainable approach to space technology meeting societal and scientific challenges now and in the future, on Earth and beyond.

Thematic area Land
With a growing population, the need increases for well-planned and efficient communities with access to clean water and sanitation, more but also climate-adapted housing, and resilient infrastructure for water, energy, and transportation, as well as sustainable agriculture and forestry.

Centres
Our centres gather expertise in various research areas in collaboration with academia, public society and business. You will find all of them here.

Research infrastructures
The concept of a research infrastructure includes everything from advanced real or virtual labs to testbeds, large databases, computer capacity for large-scale calculations and magnificent research facilities. In short, everything necessary to conduct truly outstanding research.
Development and innovation

Sports Technology
Chalmers has broad expertise and a good research infrastructure in sport and technology. Here, athletes, coaches, industry and sports organisations can meet researchers, engineers and students to initiate advanced sports-related research. Sports technology spans several scientific disciplines and aims to improve athletes' performance and safety.

Collaborate in education and with students
We want to give our students the best possible conditions for assimilating the teaching with a clear link between theory and practice. Chalmers therefore collaborates with industry, commerce and society in various ways. One key aspect is to give the education a clear connection with working life.

Research-related development
Our research institutes take on specific assignments that need support for a solution with the help of researchers, and Chalmers' innovation system contributes to bringing innovations to the benefit of society.

Compel battery initiative
Through the collaboration platform Compel Chalmers, Lund University and Uppsala University are responding to the need to ensure the long-term competitiveness of the automotive industry and Sweden as a whole. Compel stands for för Competence and Excellence in Battery Research and Education for the Transport Sector. In 2025, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Luleå University of Technology joined the initiative, forming a strengthened national platform for battery research and education.
