Chalmers’ vision for the campus of the future

Chalmers campus is where past, present and future meet – the starting point for the Campus vision that will be adopted this autumn.

Knowledge, curiosity and a pioneering spirit are key themes as Chalmers’ campus vision is now being set out in writing.

As a campus-based university, Chalmers needs a clear vision for how its campus environment should be designed and used in order to be functional, welcoming and inspiring for students, staff, visitors and the surrounding community.

The campus vision describes the long-term, enduring values that will guide the design of the campus environment and future development plans. It focuses on quality, timelessness and creating the right conditions for academic life and the student experience.

At its core, the message is clear: the campus should be an academic meeting place, where research, education and learning are at the centre – within a vibrant academic environment that inspires both students and staff.

“The campus vision is vital for Chalmers’ long-term development. It outlines how the campus can support our ambition to be a world-leading technical university through concrete quality criteria for the physical environment – benefiting research, education, innovation, collaboration, attractiveness and sustainability,” says Fredrik Nilsson, Vice President for Campus Development.

Chalmers’ central location in the heart of Gothenburg offers a unique opportunity to make the campus an even more visible part of city life. At the same time, it presents challenges as the university continues to grow.

Campus entrances are highlighted as key areas where Chalmers’ identity can be strengthened and where the interaction between the city and academia can become more visible. In particular, Chalmersplatsen holds untapped potential.

Proposed new campus vision:

“Chalmers campus is a place of knowledge, curiosity and forward thinking. Here, academia, entrepreneurship and tradition come together in a sustainable community where ideas are explored, challenged and brought to life.”

What should the campus be like?

  • Distinctive

  • Vibrant

  • Health-promoting

  • Functional

What happens next?

Consultation and dialogue with relevant stakeholders will take place over the coming months. A decision on the Campus vision is expected to be made in September.
