Our research focuses on the inflammatory process and the most important white blood cells of innate immunity, the neutrophils.

An illustration of neutrophils different interactions during an inflammatory process

Using a basic scientific approach, the interaction between neutrophil sugar structures and lectins, such as galectins, which are sugar-binding proteins with potentially immunoregulatory functions, is investigated.

Translational studies of blood cells from children with autoinflammatory diseases then transfer hypotheses and questions to the clinical reality with the aim of better understanding the role of neutrophils and lectins in the inflammatory process.

The long-term purpose is to be able to influence, at the molecular level, the inflammatory process in chronically or acutely ill persons.

The research is sponsored by the Swedish Research Council – Medicine.
