At Chalmers University of Technology there are a number of centres, national competence centres as well as other centres which cooperate across traditional departmental boundaries. Here we list some of the centres that the Department of Mechanical Engineering run and co-operate with the most.
CAM2 – Centre for Additive Manufacture Metal
Centre for Additive Manufacture Metal, CAM2, is a Vinnova funded competence centre focusing on research and development of materials and processes for additive manufacturing (3D printing) of advanced metallic components. The centre is a consortium of more than 25 companies and five research actors.
Centre for Metal Cutting Research
MCR is dedicated to strengthening industry-academia partnerships by bringing together large industries, an association of SMEs and other research providers. The centre supports Chalmers scientists to engage in interdisciplinary research across departments, divisions and research groups. The MCR facilitates industry-driven operations in the area of metal cutting via research, learning, and by managing two competence-networks related to process-/metalworking fluids and grinding technology.
MAXBATT
MAXBATT is a competence center established with the aim of strengthening Sweden's competitiveness in battery production. The goal is to create a dynamic environment for the development and production of world-leading sustainable battery technologies and systems.
Wingquist Laboratory
Wingquist Laboratory is an internationally competitive competence centre for multidisciplinary research within the field of digital product realization. The lab envisions a fully digital product realization process, where complex, mechanical, assembled products and their production systems are developed and verified together, without need for physical prototypes or testing.
TechForH2
TechForH2 is a competence center for multidisciplinary hydrogen research with the overall aim of developing new technology in hydrogen propulsion for heavier vehicles as an important step in the transition to a fossil-free transport system.
CHARMEC
CHARMEC is a National Centre of Excellence in railway rechanics with 12 partners from industry and public sector. The research sets out from the interaction between train and track and resulting phenomena - noise, material deterioration, brake phenomena - which cause over half of the maintenance costs of track and freight vehicles.
Lighthouse, maritime competence centre
Lighthouse is a national competence centre for maritime research and innovation. It's based on a triple helix collaboration between academy, industry and government. The purpose is to be a driver for reaching the maritime zero vision, which envisages zero accidents and zero noxious emissions.
SAFER, Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre
SAFER is a centre of excellence for vehicle and traffic safety which conducts collaborative, interdisciplinary research and innovation to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries in traffic. Chalmers is the host for the center, which has 34 partners from academia, industry and society.
