Prompted by climate emergency and advances in digital technologies with yet undefined potentials, this research area explores how these emerging digital media can facilitate a more resource efficient material practice of architectural design.
Our research
Instead of generating construction waste and depleting fossil resources, this new material practice focuses on reuse of existing building materials and components, while also exploring new applications for novel biobased materials derived from organic industrial waste and abundant biomass. These materials are developed to create new systems with unique architectural qualities and functions. As the digital media in focus are continually evolving, their full potential and suitability for architectural applications are not yet fully understood and demonstrated. Our research area aims to unfold this potential, establishing the value of digital media in supporting sustainable material practices of architectural design. An important component of this work involves analytical studies of historical material practices and design media.
Within this framing, our research activities fall into five themes, outlined below.
