Structures Lab

In the Construction Laboratory, testing is conducted on structures and structural components related to the building and civil engineering sector, supporting the research carried out at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The primary application area for the department’s research is infrastructure, with a particular focus on bridges.

The Construction Laboratory is closely linked to the experimental activities within the Division of Structural Engineering. We perform both static and fatigue tests, working mainly with large-format materials such as steel, concrete, wood, and composite materials—typically in the form of beams, slabs, or walls.

We primarily conduct internal testing within the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (ACE). Subject to availability, we also undertake assignments for other departments at Chalmers and for external clients. For inquiries, please contact Sebastian Almfeldt.

Examples of Services Offered:

  • Testing of concrete strength (cubes/cylinders)
  • Testing of large structural elements, e.g., in 3-point bending
  • Manufacturing of test equipment
  • Configuration and creative modifications of measurement equipment
  • 3D scanning
  • Motion analysis using DIC (Digital Image Correlation)

    Concrete Structures Research Area

Our research concerns the structural behaviour of concrete structures. It spans over wide scales, both in time  - from milliseconds in impulse loading to more than hundred years in long-term deterioration, and in length - from corrosion penetration depths of micrometres to whole bridges with dimensions of hundreds of metres. Our ambition is to provide world-class basic and research education, and internationally leading research in Concrete Structures. Thereby, we contribute with high impact to a sustainable society with world-class educated researchers and engineers.

Steel and Timber Structures Research Area

Our work addresses critical questions on extending the service life of existing structures and developing new materials and methods for more robust and sustainable steel and timber structures. We focus on existing steel and composite structures, enhancing their longevity with advanced assessments and innovative repair techniques, particularly in fatigue life extension. We also pioneer new applications of various steel materials and design concepts to meet higher sustainability standards. Additionally, we are advancing timber construction to create sustainable, high-performance structures.
