Housing in Gothenburg

Finding a home in a new city can feel complicated. For eligible students, Chalmers works with student-housing providers to arrange a housing offer. Start by checking whether the Chalmers housing guarantee applies to you. If it does, learn how the offer process works and what to check before accepting. If not, explore housing providers and private options as early as you can.

Students with housing guarantee

Chalmers helps eligible students by arranging one accommodation offer through a housing provider. The guarantee does not mean free housing or a choice of room or apartment; accommodation is assigned according to availability.

Who the guarantee applies to:

  • Fee-paying programme students, including scholarship recipients

  • Double Degree students from the University of Stuttgart

  • Erasmus Mundus students, except those coming only for internship or thesis work

  • Exchange students from partner universities outside Europe

  • Nordic Five Tech and UNITECH students

If your category is not listed, or you are unsure whether the guarantee applies, contact the Chalmers accommodation team before making housing plans.

Students without a housing guarantee

Non-fee-paying master’s students, Erasmus exchange students, ENHANCE students and students coming only for internship or thesis work need to arrange their own housing. If you are unsure, contact the Chalmers accommodation team. Start early and combine several search routes, as student-housing queue times can be long.

Where to look

  1. Join the student-housing queues. Register with Chalmers Studentbostäder and SGS Studentbostäder as early as you can.

  1. Explore several search routes. Try Boplats Väst, private landlords and reputable rental platforms.

  1. Consider temporary accommodation. A short-term option can give you more time to search after arrival.

  1. Look beyond the city centre. Use the Västtrafik journey planner to compare the journey to your campus.

Bringing a partner or family

The housing guarantee covers only the admitted student in the form of a single occupancy apartment. It does not promise a larger home or separate accommodation for family members. Begin searching early and, before accepting an offer, ask the provider whether the accommodation and contract permit a partner, child or even pet to live with you.

Coming with family

If you are planning on bringing your family to Gothenburg, there are some things to consider – both in the planning process and after your arrival.

Housing providers that Chalmers works with

If you are guaranteed a housing offer, you will receive an offer from one of providers Chalmers works with.  Once a provider contacts you, ask the provider about the offer, contract, rent, keys, move-in, maintenance, occupancy or subletting. Ask Chalmers about eligibility or initial placement.

Private and temporary housing options

Regardless of whether you have a guaranteed housing offer or not, you can also search through private landlords, rental platforms and temporary accommodation. Look beyond the city centre and compare the journey to your campus before deciding.

Home insurance

Arrange home insurance (hemförsäkring) for the period you rent your accommodation. Chalmers' student insurance covers personal injury during school hours and while travelling to and from Chalmers; it does not protect your home or belongings.

Home insurance protects your belongings against theft, fire and water damage and normally includes liability protection and legal assistance. If you do not yet have a Swedish personal identity number or BankID, you may need to contact insurers by phone. Check the exact cover, start date, identification and payment requirements before buying.

Insurance for students

As a student at Chalmers, you are automatically covered by a personal injury insurance through Kammarkollegiet, a Swedish government agency that provides insurance for students in higher education.

    Cost of living

Your living cost mainly depends on your lifestyle and can, therefore, vary quite much from student to student. Sweden may not be the cheapest country to live in, but if you plan ahead and make a monthly budget there is no reason to feel your money will not last. Also, make sure to look for student discounts as many stores and restaurants have great deals for students.
